Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
