European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
