Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
