The Substance Film
The filmmaker's bold satire addresses the demanding standards for women's appearance and the feared consequences of growing older. Demi Moore presents a brilliant portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, a mature film star demoted to hosting a workout series on television. Forced aside thanks to her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a secretive and gruesome procedure known as the Substance. This generates a new version of herself named Sue, resulting in a steadily more vampiric relationship between them. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+

Presence
Steven Soderbergh pushes his creative boundaries with this clever ghostly tale filmed completely through the eyes of the spirit. After a clan including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their recent residence, the lens – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. The daughter appears sensing the ghostly being, and it looks like protective of her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Nicolas Cage fully commits to his unique fame through this self-referential adventure. He acts as an egotistical film star named Nicolas Cage who takes on a million-dollar gig to appear at a celebration on the Spanish island for the wealthy superfan Javi. Recruited by the intelligence agency to gather intel on the alleged criminal, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. This Saturday, 9pm, on Channel 4
This Creepy Thriller
Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has rendered the youth on edge. When Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and held captive in a cellar, he dreads a terrible outcome. However, the old telephone in the room continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, and the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the battle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for Mammon in this director's delightfully tacky biopic about the fallen TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor acts as the venal Jim, who declares initially, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals set about capitalizing on the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of bad interior design, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet the lead actress succeeds to show the real-life figure in a likable light. Next Tuesday, late night, Film4
The Spy Mystery
The current week's second offering from Steven Soderbergh presents a spy mystery as precise like the turtlenecks sported by Fassbender's UK spy. He is tasked to identify a mole among the team out of five possibilities – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are masters of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful psychological game of truth or lie unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the smart espionage amusement. October 17th, various showings, the Sky channel
